New Study Links Common Artificial Sweetener to Heart Attack and Stroke Risk

As a professional writer, I would like to share with you some information about a recent study that has linked a common artificial sweetener called erythritol to an increased risk of heart attack and stroke. According to a new study by Cleveland Clinic, erythritol is associated with an increased risk for heart attack and stroke in some individuals². Erythritol is made from fermented corn and is commonly used in products that are designed to be low-calorie, low-carbohydrate, or for people on keto diets¹.

The study involved over 4,000 people from the United States and Europe and found that those with higher blood levels of erythritol were at higher risk for major adverse cardiac events over three years of follow-up³. The researchers also discovered that erythritol made platelets easier to activate and form a clot³.

This is cause for concern, especially since erythritol is typically used in foods targeting people who want to lose weight or who have diabetes. And those same individuals are already at risk for cardiac events². Another issue is that this ingredient isn’t always included on the label².

So, what does this mean for the general public? If you have obesity, diabetes, heart disease or are otherwise at risk for it, you should avoid foods with this artificial sweetener in them².
